A World Cup without US

The first match I ever covered for The Garrett County Republican was a high school boys’ soccer match between the Huskies and the Rams at Northern High School. This was back in Sept. 2016.

The match ended in a scoreless draw, but it was an exciting scoreless draw. As a huge fan of soccer, or what some refer to as “The Beautiful Game,” it made me positively giddy to see the passion on display on the field and in the stands.

It reminded me of how, growing up, I had this asinine belief that one day soccer would become big in America.

I never wanted it to be more popular than football, basketball or baseball. I just wanted it to, at one point, be given the same type of exposure. I’m also not saying that everyone should like soccer. One of my best friends still refers to soccer as “Commie-Ball,” and though I disagree with him, I still laugh every time.

I remember back when I was in fifth grade, and the U.S. Men’s National Team shocked the world by advancing all the way to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup. If not for a hand-ball in the box that wasn’t called on Germany, I still believe we would have won that match.
