American League playoff picture 2017: Boston Red Sox lead AL East, New York Yankees lead AL wild card

BOSTON – The Red Sox will play their 120th game of the season Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Boston holds a 4 1/2 game lead in the American League East with 42 games left in the regular season after today. 

The division is by no means locked up with Boston hosting second-place New York for three games this weekend and visiting New York for four games Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.

Meanwhile, 28 of Boston’s final 42 games are against division opponents.

As of Wednesday, the Red Sox, Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros lead the East, Central and West, respectively. 

The Indians are up 5 1/2 games on the Royals in the Central, but the Astros lead second-place Anaheim by 12 1/2.

Though Houston has had the best record in the AL for much of the season, the Astros have gone 3-7 in their last 10 games, giving Boston, with the second best record in the AL, a chance at the best record. 

The Red Sox sit at 68-51 while the Astros are 73-46. Boston hosts Houston for four games in the final series of the regular season. 

If the playoffs started today, Boston, Cleveland and Houston would enter as winners of their divisions.
