If the Amway Coaches Poll determined the playoff foursome, Alabama would be in. It doesn’t, of course, so fans of the Crimson Tide and Ohio State must wait a little longer for the committee’s decision.
Clemson will enter the playoff with the No. 1 ranking seeking a second consecutive national championship. The Tigers easily dispatched Miami (Fla.) in the ACC title game and received 49 of 61 first-place votes cast this week. Big 12 champion Oklahoma is No. 2, with the Sooners picking up 10 firsts. Georgia, which avenged its lone loss to Auburn to claim the SEC crown, checks in at No. 3 with the remaining two first-place nods.
Then there’s that debate at the four spot. It was close in the poll, with the Tide narrowly edging the Buckeyes by 14 points. It figures to be close in the committee room as well.
TOP 25: Amway Coaches Poll
BALLOTS: How they voted
Stock up: Southern California. It probably won’t help the Trojans make the playoff, but their Pac-12 title helped them jump two places to No. 7.
Stock down: Wisconsin. The Badgers came up just short
