Another long night for Bentley, Gamecocks against Clemson

COLUMBIA — A year ago, South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley suffered through his worst game in a Gamecocks uniform.

After suffering through a humiliating 56-7 beatdown at Clemson last November, Bentley vowed that the Gamecocks would not be outplayed as badly this time around.

Well, it wasn’t another 49-point loss, but the 34-10 defeat Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium felt just as one-sided for the Gamecocks.

Bentley, USC’s sophomore quarterback, told reporters over the summer that this year’s game would be different. That the Gamecocks would compete for 60 minutes and make the outcome closer.

“We just didn’t play well that week,” Bentley said in an interview back in July. “We felt we got outworked. So our big thing is ‘never again’ will we be outworked.”

A year ago against the Tigers, Bentley completed just 7 of 17 passes for 41 yards and an interception. On Saturday, he wasn’t much better. Bentley was 16 of 29 for 126 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, including a pick-six.

“They have a great defensive line and it’s kind of hard not to let that affect the way you play,” Bentley said. “We had some plays to get it out fast and those were effective when we were able to use them. But when you get third-and-long against them it’s a hard deal.”
