There was no chance for a Triple Crown winner, and the absence of Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness champion Cloud Computing meant that none of the competitors in the Belmont Stakes had a chance to win two of the jewels in the sport’s top races for three-year-olds.

Some of the luster was off the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes, but a talented 11-horse field meant that this wide-open race had a chance to be thrilling for the crowd of 57,729 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

The race did not disappoint.

Tapwrit came roaring down the stretch, passed leader Irish War Cry and won the third jewel of the Triple Crown with a rousing finish that left his rivals knowing they had been beaten by the best horse in the field.

Tapwrit outlasted Irish War Cry, who finished second, and Patch finished third in the 1 ½-mile Test of Champions.
