Doc: Reds have hope, future cornered with Greene

Reds general manager Dick Williams and Chris Buckley, the team’s vice president for amateur scouting, discuss the first day of the team’s 2017 draft. Cincinnati took California high school right-hander Hunter Greene No. 2 overall. The team also took Florida high school shortstop Jeter Downs at No. 32 and Wake Forest center fielder Stuart Fairchild at No. 38.

Hunter Greene isn’t going to save baseball, because baseball doesn’t need saving. Let’s not make him the “face’’ of anything, OK? He’s all of 17 years old. Let’s allow the Reds 1st-round draft pick to be himself. By all accounts, that will be plenty good enough.

“This is exactly the kind of kid we desperately need,” a “major league official’’ told Sports Illustrated. Ah, c’mon.
