Eli Apple is the face of Giants’ first step toward quitting

Have the Giants quit?

It is always and forever the accusation when teams go rotten, and rarely is it an accurate depiction of what is going down. To quit is not to care, not to give effort, not to have the desire to win. This is not the Giants. No, they have not quit, yet.

There is time for quitting, perhaps as soon as this weekend, when the 1-7 Giants face the 0-9 49ers in what is sure to be a mild, not-at-all-filled Levi’s Stadium in lovely Santa Clara. Or maybe quitting time comes later, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when in back-to-back weeks the Giants play host to the Cowboys and Eagles, a pair of division rivals sick of hearing about the Super Bowl triumphs in 2007 and 2011 and eager to kick a despised opponent when it is down.

What the Giants did in their football-atrocity 51-17 loss to the Rams was fail to compete, which is different than quitting. To this point, the Giants still care, but are not willing to put themselves in harm’s way or do the dirty work required to win.

It is hard to imagine Eli Apple, the second-year cornerback, has mailed it in. But did you see his lack of response, his disregard for chasing the ball, on that horrific, 52-yard catch-and-run touchdown jaunt through
