Giants rookie WR Travis Rudolph makes most of opportunity | Snap count analysis

EAST RUTHERFORD — Undrafted free agent wide receiver Travis Rudolph knew he was going to have a major opportunity in the Giants‘ preseason game against theĀ Jets on Saturday night. Rudolph seized the moment.

The Florida State product had three catches for 81 yards, highlighted by a 57-yard catch-and-run after he snatched a high pass from quarterback Josh Johnson over the head of Jets cornerback Darryl Roberts. Rudolph played 33 offensive snaps, many coming as the third wide receiver with the first-team offense.

“He made the most of his opportunity,” coach Ben McAdoo said. “He had a chance to shine, and he took advantage of it.”

Sterling Shepard (32 snaps) and Roger Lewis (31) were the Giants’ top receivers with Odell Beckham Jr. (ankle) and Brandon Marshall (shoulder) sidelined by injuries. Receivers Tavarres King (ankle) and Dwayne Harris (upper body) also missed the game.

Here are some additional takeaways from Saturday’s snap counts:

*McAdoo mixed up his first-team offensive line for the first time this preseason. Brett Jones replaced right guard John Jerry after the first series. McAdoo said the early switch was pre-planned, but it seemed highly coincidental that Jerry was pulled after allowing a pressure that led to an Eli Manning interception. Jones, who moved to center in the second half, played 38 offensive snaps. D.J. Fluker got two series with the first-team offense at right guard in the second quarter.

Rookie Chad Wheeler replaced Ereck Flowers as the first-team left tackle for the final drive of the first half. McAdoo said that change was also planned, but it came after Flowers allowed a sack to end the previous drive.

*McAdoo continues to tinker at free safety. Darian Thompson got the start, but he only played 15 defensive snaps. While most of the defensive starters played the entire first half, Thompson was replaced by Andrew Adams at the start of the second quarter. Nat Berhe also got some snaps with the starters before Thompson came back in to finish the half. CornerbackĀ Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie got some snaps at free safety in Monday’s game against the Browns.

*Manning was pulled earlier than expected, leaving after leading a touchdown drive at the end of the first quarter. Josh Johnson replaced Manning, but only got 12 snaps on three series. Geno Smith (20 snaps) played most of the second half before giving way to rookie Davis Webb for the final two series.

*Defensive end Devin Taylor played just six defensive snaps. Taylor flashed in the preseason opener, but he has combined for 15 snaps in the past two games. That doesn’t bode well for Taylor at a deep defensive end position.

*The second-team linebacking corps featured a new look. Defensive end Romeo Okwara played strong side linebacker with Curtis Grant in the middle and Calvin Munson on the weak side. Okwara, who also plays defensive tackle in passing situations, has been getting reps at linebacker recently. Munson has mostly played middle linebacker this preseason. He was beat badly by Jets running back Bilal Powell on an 85-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.

*There was plenty of special teams work on Saturday with a whopping 35 snaps in the kicking game. For comparison, there were only 18 special teams snaps in Monday’s game.

Munson, Adams and defensive end Avery Moss are starters on all four core units. Thompson, Berhe and cornerback Donte Deayon started on three units.
