Guregian: Pats ahead of game on Steelers’ plans to man up vs. Tom Brady

Interesting to read that the Steelers have figured out the secret to beating Tom Brady and the Patriots. They believe their ticket to the Super Bowl lies in playing more man coverage.

Well, we’re glad to see someone finally put their thinking caps on in the Steel City. Because for more years than we can count, Brady has been finding the soft spots in their zone defenses, and picking them apart. Five months ago, Tom Terrific threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns in the AFC title game against a Steelers defensive scheme everyone rightly predicted he’d torch. For his career, he’s 10-2 vs. the Steelers, having thrown 29 TD passes against them.

Pittsburgh did mix in a few man coverages in the 36-17 loss, but nothing that would rattle the Patriots quarterback or stunt the offense. As the Steelers have noted, the two teams that gave the Patriots the most trouble along their Super Bowl journey — the Texans and Falcons — played primarily man coverage. And without the Patriots best weapon against man coverage, Rob Gronkowski, those teams had some success before Brady and the offense ultimately prevailed.

But here’s the rub: Bill Belichick is way ahead of everyone. He’s already adjusted for the adjustments.
