How the Falcons replicated Seattle’s defense

HOUSTON – The New England Patriots have not played the Atlanta Falcons since Dan Quinn took over as head coach, but they are very familiar with the defense they’ll face in Super Bowl LI.

Before Quinn got the head job in Atlanta, he served two seasons as the Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator. His last game with the Seahawks was Super Bowl XLIX, which the Patriots won 28-24.

Quinn is only two years into a major rebuild of the defense. The numbers may not back it up – Football Outsiders ranked Atlanta 27th in defensive DVOA – partially because it’s taken time for young players to adapt to a system that requires so much of them, but if you squint your eyes hard enough, these Falcons already look an awful lot like those great Seahawks
