No, that was not Troy Polamalu coming out of retirement Saturday to work out with the Steelers. That was just an avid fan wearing a Polamalu No. 43 jersey — complete with pads and helmet — who managed to sneak past security and onto the field in an attempt to participate in practice.
As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the unidentified man didn’t get to mix it up with actual Steelers players during a practice at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
But he came awfully close during an afternoon session that was open for fans to watch — from behind a fence, that is.
Before things got too far — and before the impostor might have gotten seriously injured — Steelers players recognized the stranger among them.
They might have been tipped off by the fact the fan was wearing Polamalu’s old No. 43, which the Steelers have not used since Polamalu retired after 2014. The fan’s jersey also looked nothing like the duds the real Steelers were wearing.
The man was then quickly escorted off the premises.
The team had no comment after the incident.
