Kerryon Johnson plays through injuries, held to season-low rushing in SEC Championship Game loss

Kerryon Johnson wasn’t focused on his injured shoulder, or the bandage on his right ribs.

After being held to a season low 44 rushing yards on 13 carries in a 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, Auburn’s star running back was downtrodden about fumbling for the first time all season.

“Injuries never had anything to do with the fumble,” Johnson said of his turnover on the opening play of the fourth quarter. “I just didn’t wrap the ball up, that’s just how it is. If you’re going to go out there and play, you got to play and not mess up and I fumbled, I hurt the team. That led to their next two touchdowns. Momentum swing. That’s when we lost the game, is when I messed up. I got to own up to that, that’s my fault.”

Johnson made no excuse for his injuries and didn’t even acknowledge the undisclosed issue with his right ribs, saying only that he was “not 100 (percent),” but nobody is at this point in the season.

It didn’t stop coaches and teammates from praising his toughness.

“I can’t say enough about how tough he is and the guts he has,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. “He was banged up. He had some rib issues. He had a shoulder issue. We didn’t really know if he
