The 49ers acquired their quarterback of the future, Jimmy Garoppolo, earlier this week in a trade with the New England Patriots, but when will that future be here?
After all, the 49ers have an 0-8 record — patience is wearing thin.
But 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t provide any answers to that question at his press conference Wednesday — he even went as far to say that Garoppolo might not play for the 49ers this season.
“I can’t promise you guys that he won’t play this week. I can’t promise you guys that he’ll play this year,” Shanahan said.
That was probably a bit of hyperbole to create misdirection, and so the question stands: When will Garoppolo start a game for the 49ers?

This week against Arizona: 0.01 percent chance
Shanahan has named rookie C.J. Beathard the starter for Sunday’s game, so unless Beathard is injured or falls ill before kickoff, you can count on him to take the snaps against the Cardinals.
Shanahan and Garoppolo are in agreement that learning the head coach’s offensive playbook isn’t going to be something the quarterback can fully do in a few days — it’s verbose and complex, and going out there without an understanding of it
