Michigan State defense shuts down Penn State’s Heisman hopefuls in 27-24 upset win

EAST LANSING — It’s safe to say that Chris Frey is sick of hearing about Saquon Barkley.

Respectively, of course.

The senior linebacker said when the Michigan State defense faces a high-profile player, it rises to the challenge. The numbers Saturday prove that theory.

Frey and the Spartans defense held the Heisman Trophy hopeful to 68 yards — 36 of which came on one carry — on 14 attempts in a 27-24 upset of No. 7 Penn State inside a damp Spartan Stadium. Barkley rushed the ball six times in the first half, failing to pick up a single yard.
