NFL playoff standings 2016: Falcons are a win away from a 1st-round bye in NFC

The Seattle Seahawks slipped up in Week 16 and the Atlanta Falcons took advantage. With one more win, the Falcons will guarantee themselves the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.

Seattle had the inside track to the No. 2 seed, but spoiled the chance with a loss to the Arizona Cardinals. While the Seahawks, Falcons and Detroit Lions are all still in the race for the spot, Atlanta only needs to beat the New Orleans Saints to secure it.

With a win, the Falcons would improve to 11-5, which can only be matched by the Lions and New York Giants. But a strength-of-victory tiebreaker over Detroit means Atlanta will be seeded ahead of the Lions if the teams have identical records, and the Giants can’t grab one of the top four seeds after the Dallas Cowboys locked down the NFC East.

At the bottom of the NFC playoff standings are the Green Bay Packers, hanging on by a thread. Getting a win over the Lions on Sunday Night Football would give the Packers the NFC North, regardless of Detroit’s result against the Cowboys on Monday. But a loss for the Packers could open the door for Washington to slide in control of the No. 6 seed.
