NHL All-Stars weigh in on keys to three-on-three

LOS ANGELES – All-Star Game formats, across all sports, seem to change as frequently as the tides, so let’s prepare for the NHL’s version to be played on Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET, NBC) at Staples Center.

The basics: Four teams are fielded with 11 players from each division. The Eastern and Western conference teams will each meet in a 20-minute, three-on-three game. The winners will advance to the final, with $1 million awarded to the winning team.

A year ago, in the first try with this format, the Pacific Division beat the Atlantic Division 1-0 in the final.

What about three-on-three? The format has been a winning addition to the regular season, settling more games without a shootout and producing fast-paced and exciting play.

“It’s a completely different game,” Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds said
