Steve Kerr to return to Warriors bench Friday against Pacers

Steve Kerr had butterflies Friday night for his long-awaited season debut coaching the defending NBA champions.

Sure, Golden State’s second-year coach knocked down a half-court shot in Cleveland earlier this week that pointed to him returning to full strength.

He came back to the Warriors’ bench Friday night following a long leave of absence dating to the first week of training camp in October as he recovered from complications following two back surgeries.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time … I really missed the routine,” Kerr said. “It feels like the first game of the season, which it is for me. Fortunately our team’s in a pretty good groove and hopefully we can keep going. “

When introduced just before tipoff against the Pacers, an emotional Kerr waved and said “Thank you” to a rousing ovation.

The defending champion Warriors made the announcement Friday morning that Kerr would coach Golden State against Indiana at Oracle Arena, where the Warriors will try to win their 38th straight regular-season home game to tie the 1985-86 Celtics for third place on the all-time list for such unbeaten streaks. The Warriors went 39-4 in Kerr’s absence. They are 19-0 at home this season and haven’t lost at Oracle since a 113-111 overtime defeat to Chicago last Jan. 27.

“It’s been rough. I’ve gotten a lot better. I

Yoenis Cespedes reaches three-year, $75 million deal with Mets

Yoenis Cespedes is staying in New York.

Cespedes, 30, agreed to a deal with the Mets on Friday night, according to ESPN’s Jim Bowden and media reports, a move that takes the last big bat off the free-agent market.

The deal, pending a physical, is for three years and $75 million, including $27.5 million in the first year, after which he can opt out.

A right-handed-hitting outfielder from Cuba, Cespedes is coming off a career year, which started with the Detroit Tigers before he was traded to the Mets just minutes before the trade deadline. He set career highs in a number of power categories, including home runs (35), RBIs (105) and OPS (.870). His power was on full display with New York, for whom he hit 17 home runs in 57 games, including nine in a

Nigeria calls on Muslim world to condemn ISIS

“Of course we must contain them militarily, that’s absolutely important because they are a military force. But I think more important, and going forward, is ideological. We have to deal with the ideological issues and (Nigeria’s) President Buhari has simply called on Muslim leaders all over the world to speak out against the Islamic State and fundamentally attack that evil ideology,” Yemi Osinbajo told CNBC on Friday from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Nigeria’s population is split fairly evenly between Christians and Muslims, although the Islamic populace is seen becoming proportionately larger over time.

The country faces a major struggle against Islamist terrorists, with the Boko Haram group claiming allegiance to ISIS and operating mainly in Nigeria. In the first nine months of 2015, Boko Haram killed 3,500 civilians across Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, according to Amnesty International.

Canada school shooting: four confirmed dead as lockdown is lifted

The number of dead in a school shooting in northern Canada was revised down to four from five, the Canadian police said late Friday, but gave no new details on either the victims or the one male in custody.

In a media briefing, Chief Superintendent Maureen Levy of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said that chaos in the immediate wake of the shooting at La Loche community school made some of the early information unreliable.

Levy also said that a number of people were injured in the daytime shooting on Friday in La Loche, Saskatchewan, a community about 600km from Saskatoon.

“In incidents such as this there is a lot of information going back-and-forth very quickly,” Levy said.

She did not confirm the number of injured or the extent of their injuries or any further information about the casualties or the suspect, saying the police force wanted to “ensure the integrity of the investigation”.

Acting mayor Kevin Janvier told the Associated Press that his 23-year-old daughter, a teacher, was among those killed by the shooter.

“He shot two of his brothers at his home and made his way to the school,” Janvier is quoted as saying. “I’m just so sad.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking from Davos earlier, said: “We all grieve with and stand with the community of La Loche and

Second Chance Star Rob Kazinsky on His Days as a ‘Fat’ World of Warcraft Pro: ‘I Was Deliriously Happy’

No matter how well-suited actor Rob Kazinsky might seem to the world of TV and film by way of his breakout role on a British soap opera East Enders – with his handsome looks, fit physique, etc. – the actor, 32, is more at home in the world of traditional geek culture – playing video games and collecting Star Trek memorabilia.

His proudest video game-related achievement? That he was paid to play popular online computer game World of Warcraft professionally.

“I still play,” the Second Chance star tells PEOPLE. “I played it professionally for a long time. It was my job 18 hours a day to play that game at one point.”

Was that the most odd job he’s had?

“No, but it was the happiest, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “All I did was sit down in my underwear, order food in and play computer games for 18 hours and get fat and I was deliriously happy while doing it.”

With regard to his love of Star Trek, he says he keeps that passion mostly to himself, along with the memorabilia he’s collected over the years.

“I don’t have anything that’s worth keeping in a display case but some of the stuff you put on for fun,” he says with a laugh. “[But] going outside in my full Star Trek

Somalia hotel attack: Terrorists kill at least 20 people in Mogadishu

“Thursday night in Mogadishu is like Friday night in other countries,” Aato said. “It’s very busy. People have their weddings; they go out to eat with their families.”

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on its mouthpiece radio station, reporting that its fighters armed with AK-47 rifles and wearing suicide vests had invaded the hotel.

Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked militant organization, has carried out similar attacks targeting civilian areas in the past.

Four dead, several injured in shooting in Saskatchewan school

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier addressed the nation, saying, “Obviously this is every parent’s worst nightmare” and calling it “a terrible, tragic day.”

‘Run, bro, run!’

The Star Phoenix newspaper quoted a student who said he was returning from lunch when shots were fired at the school. He said friends ran past him urging him to get out.

“Run, bro, run!” Noel Desjarlais-Thomas, 16, said his friends told him as they fled. “There’s a shotgun! There’s a shotgun! They were just yelling to me. And then I was hearing those shots, too, so of course I started running.”

School coordinator Norma Janvier told the Star Phoenix she was in her office when she heard shots.

“I didn’t know what was going on,” she said. “I thought the kids were just playing around or something, like a locker slamming and stuff.”

She said another teacher stopped her from leaving the office so she waited until someone said it was safe.

“All I heard was cops running around in the school,” she said.

‘A lot of people are in shock’

Clearwater River Dene Nation Chief Teddy Clark described the shooting as devastating in an interview with The Star Phoenix newspaper.

“Both Clearwater and La Loche, a lot of people are in shock. This is something that

What’s trending in the NFL: Will Marshawn Lynch retire?

Here are the top stories from Friday:

Seahawks general manager John Schneider: Running back Marshawn Lynch is “leaning toward retirement”

From Bill Barnwell’s story on how the Broncos can beat the Patriots: “Brady-Manning XVII is expected to be an exercise in squeezing Denver’s quarterback, in Bill Belichick swarming the field on the fading Manning and waiting for the 39-year-old to make mistakes. The game could very well turn out that way. New England is rightly the favorite to win this game, almost wholly because nobody trusts Manning. The divisional-round victory was Manning’s first start of the year without an interception, and it would be a small miracle if he bumped that streak to two. As much as it would be a fairy-tale story in what is likely to be the last Brady-Manning encounter, it’s extremely tough to imagine the Broncos evening the quarterback gap by virtue of a classic performance from Manning.”
