5-on-5: What’s next for Cavaliers after the David Blatt firing?

David Blatt is out as Cleveland Cavaliers coach. Our panel of experts offer their breakdown of the moves and whether LeBron James‘ team has improved its hopes of winning a title.

1. Firing David Blatt: Good move or bad move?

Bradford Doolittle, ESPN Insider: Had to do it. The No. 1 job of any NBA coach is to convince the players to let him coach them. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter how good his ideas are. Some guys just don’t fit the NBA or a particular team, and vice versa.

Amin Elhassan, ESPN Insider: Good move. There had been friction between Blatt and the locker room for most of his tenure. That makes his winning percentage sort of irrelevant because if the team isn’t fully bought in, nothing else matters. For the record, one of my main concerns about Blatt before he came over from Europe was his abrasive personality.

Tom Haberstroh, ESPN Insider: Good move. It never made sense to keep Blatt in the first place if he wasn’t hired to coach LeBron James, the best player on the planet at the

ANALYSIS: The Storm That’s Hit the GOP

The Republican Party has long had a tradition of discipline in presidential elections. That’s coming to an end, and fast.

Decades of establishment office-holder and thought-leader machinations have resulted in conventional and predictable, if not always successful, candidates and candidacies.

Those days look to be over now. Ten days before the first voting of 2016, a cloud of anger and frustration has party leaders openly worried about electoral losses that could expand through generations.

What’s left of the GOP establishment is so deeply divided that it can’t even decide which of its two frontrunners needs to be stopped more urgently. That says nothing of the party’s inability to settle on one or even two candidates to represent its traditional power bases, despite a deep talent pool helped by opposition to President Obama.

As voting is set to start, Republicans have a dozen choices in front of them. Yet polls show more than half of the vote going to two candidates who combined do not have a single governor or senator behind them.

The conservative National Review has taken the unprecedented step of publishing an entire issue aimed at blocking the party’s leading candidate. Generations of prominent conservative journalists, tea party activists, and former administration officials are uniting to say that Donald Trump should

New Takata air bag recall to cover five million US vehicles

U.S. regulators on Friday announced a new recall of about 5 million vehicles with potentially defective Takata Corp air bags, covering some automakers not previously affected by one of the biggest auto safety recalls in U.S. history.

The new action brings to 28 million the number of Takata air bag inflators recalled and increases the number of vehicles affected in the United States to as many as 24 million, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.

Friday’s move was prompted in part by the death of the driver of a Ford Motor Co Ranger pickup truck last month, as well as new tests conducted on suspected faulty air bags.

Automakers affected for the first time include Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) and its Audi unit, Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz unit and Saab. Other automakers taking part in the recall announced Friday include Ford, Honda Motor Co Mazda Motor Corp and BMW AG.

“This is a massive safety crisis,” NHTSA spokesman Gordon Trowbridge told reporters.

The Dec. 22 death of a Georgia man in South Carolina was the 10th worldwide linked with Takata’s air bag inflators, NHTSA said. It was the ninth in the United States and first to occur in a vehicle that was not made by

‘Here’s to Flint!’ Flint’s water disaster began with applause

Almost two years ago, the leaders of Flint, Mich., lifted glasses of water in the air – clear water — to toast a plan to save money for their struggling city.

“Here’s to Flint!” said Mayor Dayne Walling, lifting his glass. Smiling officials responded, “Hear, hear!” and gulped down their drinks, oblivious to the disaster ahead.

Flint was in the throes of a financial crisis, and a state-appointed emergency manager had agreed on a way for the struggling Rust Belt city to save money: Stop piping expensive drinking water from Detroit.

Flint would instead draw water from the Flint River until a new pipeline could bring cheaper water from Lake Huron. State financial and environmental officials approved the project, which the state treasurer said would bring “desperately needed” savings.

“Here’s our moment, so I think we need a countdown,” the mayor said during the April 25, 2014, ceremony at a water-control facility. Onlookers chanted, “Three, two, one!” as Walling pressed a black button that would switch over the city’s water supply.

After a moment, a green light flicked off, drawing applause. The flow of water from Detroit had stopped, and a crisis that would soon consume Michigan had begun.

Cellphone encryption bill pits police against tech industry and privacy advocates

A Democratic state legislator is taking aim at smartphone encryption, arguing the strict security measures to protect cellphone data hamper law enforcement’s ability to crack down on human traffickers and other criminals.

Assemblyman Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove) has introduced a measure that would require all cellphones produced and sold in the state to have the capacity to be unlocked, setting the stage for battle with tech companies and privacy advocates.

Cooper, who unveiled his legislation Wednesday, said that data would be accessed only with a court order, limiting the impact on everyday phone users.

“It’s not the boogeyman. It’s not NSA. It’s not Edward Snowden,” Cooper said, adding that “99% of the public will never have their phone searched with a court order.

“We’re talking phones that are involved with human trafficking, which is an issue right now.”

But consumer advocates see wide-reaching repercussions in the proposal.

“This is [a] terrible policy that is entirely infeasible from a technical perspective,” said Andrew Crocker, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil liberties group. “There is no way to ensure that phones can be decrypted by the police

Energous Readies Wireless Power Tech for Consumer Devices

Long range wireless power is one of the most exciting things we saw at CES this year. We’ve already talked about Ossia, and now, we’re going to take a close look at Energous, whose WattUp technology we first saw at CES 2015. A few months ago, we spoke with Energous CTO Michael Leabman about the efficiency of his company’s system. Earlier this month, we spent over an hour in Energous’ CES demo suite checking out demos, and speaking with Leabman about the future of wireless power and what the company has in store for 2016.

Snowstorm Wreaks Havoc on Sports Schedule and Team Travel

A blizzard moving into the Eastern United States disrupted the sports schedule Friday, complicating team travel and blanketing the field where Sunday’s NFC championship game will be played with a wintry mix.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, crews scrambled to keep up with the storm, clearing snow and sleet from the tarp covering the Bank of America Stadium field. The Carolina Panthers host the Arizona Cardinals there in the NFC championship game on Sunday night.

Fans from afar who planned to make the trip were forced to scramble, too. Delta was among a handful of airlines that canceled all flights to and from Charlotte on Friday because of the storm. The forecast for the game was calling for clear skies, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-20s.

Two NBA games and one in the NHL were postponed, as were several college basketball games and NASCAR’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The NBA said Boston’s game at Philadelphia scheduled for Saturday night will be made up on Sunday at 7 p.m. The Utah Jazz’s game at Washington, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, will be reset at a later date.

The NHL initially shifted the starting time of Friday’s game between the Washington Capitals and Anaheim, moving it up two hours to 5 p.m. The league then postponed it on Friday but did not yet

The Islamic world has always had a chequered relationship with chess

The news that the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has issued a fatwa against the game of chess should come as no surprise. There has always been a chequered history of relations between Islamic clerics and practitioners of the world’s most popular board game.

Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah Al ash-Sheikh is the most powerful Sunni religious figure in Saudi Arabia and issued the fatwa while answering viewers’ questions during his weekly television broadcast ‘With his Eminence the Mufti’. The show was first broadcast in 2014, ‎but the Grand Mufti’s censorious condemnation of chess, during which he compared it to the pre-Islamic Arab game of Maisir, has only this week achieved prominence. According to the Mufti, chess is ‘haram’. He suggests it is a waste of time and causes people to squander money, presumably through gambling. This presumption is reinforced when one realises that Maisir – a game forbidden by the Koran – involves players shooting arrows to win pieces of camel meat, and offers considerable opportunities for gambling on the outcome.

The reaction of the Saudi Chess Association has, predictably, been sceptical. Their legal representative, Musa Bin Thaily, claimed that the fatwa lacks legal force‎. Public music festivals are also subject to fatwa, but they are common and the fatwa is not enforced by law. In the Islamic world chess has, from time to time, been serially banned and
