Martavis Bryant is close to re-signing with the Oakland Raiders, according to a report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. He is expected to play in this week’s Raiders game against the Denver Broncos, adding a very surprising twist to what has already been one of the most bizarre sagas in recent NFL history. The Raiders traded a third-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in order to acquire Bryant on the first night of the NFL Draft, but released him on roster cutdown day due to fears of a potential NFL suspension for violating their substance abuse policy.
But the Raiders were blown out 33-13 by the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, and failed to score a touchdown after their opening drive. Once Wade Phillips adjusted to Jon Gruden’s offense, the Raiders were held scoreless in the second half. Derek Carr threw three interceptions in total, and Gruden must have felt that his offense needed a boost. That isn’t remotely surprising considering how poorly Oakland’s receivers played against the Rams. Jared Cook dominated at tight end with nine catches for 180 yards, and Jalen Richard added nine more catches for 55. Beyond those two players, though, Oakland’s passing game produced almost nothing.
