Sergio’s unlucky 13 on 15th ruins chances to defend

For the defending champ, the 2018 Masters is pretty much over thanks to how just one hole played out.

Sergio Garcia put his ball in the water five times at the par-5 15th and finished with a 13 on the hole. He finished at 9 over for the day and is 13 shots behind the leader. 

All of the shots that landed in the water came on the approach to the green and each time hit the green dead on, but a hard back spin brought it backward into the water.

“It’s one of those things,” Garcia said. “It’s the first time in my career where I make a 13 without missing a shot. Simple as that. I felt like I hit a lot of good shots and unfortunately the ball just didn’t want to stop.”

His 13 on the hole tied a Masters mark for the worst of any hole by a golfer. Tom Weiskopf had a 13 on No. 12 in 1980, and Tommy Nakajima at No. 13 in 1978.

His first shot on the 530-yard, par-5 fell about 200 yards from the hole and in what looked like good shape. But then the disaster struck.

“I had 6‑iron,” he said. “I thought it was perfect – straight at the flag.
